Expedition to the Eastern Coastal Asmat - A rarely visited region

Tours to the Eastern Coastal Asmat are almost never done by foreigners. In some river areas, like Fajit or Dere river, many inhabitants have never seen foreigners before. The culture and traditions of these rarely visited Asmat tribes are intact and original. The villages are packed with traditional craftsmanship and the original spirit of the old Asmat can be felt in every corner.

After departure from Denpasar, our expedition continues by charter plane from Timika to Agats. From there, we continue by motor longboat.

Planned itinerary:

Arrival in Denpasar, Bali (international flights can be booked on request). Transfer to hotel Ida. Rest of day no program.

Full free day on Bali, breakfast in hotel. In late evening, transfer to airport for Garuda Indonesia flight to Timika.

Arrival in Timika around 07.00 am. Direct flight to EWER/Asmat planned on the same day. After arrival in Ewer, transfer by boat (30 min) to AGATS and overnight in hotel Anggrek.

This day we will stay in this most important settlement of Asmat. We need time to prepare our crew and equipment for the coming expedition. We will also have some time to visit the very interesting Asmat Museum.

Today we leave Agats in eastern direction. When the weather is good, we will go along the coast to BIWAR LAUT (around 5 hours drive). When the sea is stormy, we will go on small river channels (then around 7 hours drive). After arrival, we will set up our camp (tents, kitchen etc), either directly inside a typical Asmat men house ("Jeu"), an empty house, or in a school. Every day we will proceed like this.

Today we plan to drive to OMANDESEP. If we have enough time, we will also visit WARKAI. Tentcamp planned in Omandesep, which is famous for its craftsmanship.

Short boat trip to PIRIEN and OTSJANEB, also a very famous settlement of the old Asmat. Tentcamp in Otsjaneb.

In the early morning, short drive along the coast line and we reach the Fajit River (1 hour drive). We go upstream and want to visit several hidden villages. Tentcamp probably in Piramai.

Today, we visit the villages SANTAMBOR and JAPTAMBOR, which are situated directly next to the sea. Tentcamp in Japtambor.

Today, we reach the mouth of Dere River. In this river area we expect to find several hidden settlements and we plan to spend two nights here.

In Dere River region.

Drive to KAJERIN, also directly at the coast. This village is famous for its crocodile paintings and carvings as part of its traditional art.

We start going back to Agats, following the coast line. Overnight in Jow or similar.

Today we reach Agats around noon. Overnight in hotel Anggrek.

In the morning, transfer to Ewer. Flight to Timika. Transfer to Hotel Komoro Tame. Rest of day at leisure.

In the morning, transfer to airport and flight to Denpasar, Bali. Transfer to our partner hotel Ida. Rest of day no program.

Transfer to airport for your next destination.
